Dion Charles scored the winner but was then mistakenly sent off as promotion-chasing Bolton beat bottom of the table Forest Green in League One.
Top scorer Charles fired Ian Evatt’s side in the sixth minute with his 13th goal of the season as Wanderers looked to bounce back straight from the Derby loss.
However, the home side then had to play with 10 men after a flash point in the 28th minute which saw Charles mistakenly red carded by referee Tom Nield for violent conduct.
The replays made it clear team-mate Elias Kachunga blasted Rovers defender Brandon Cooper.
Despite Bolton’s protests and after a long delay, Charles eventually walked off the pitch, although the red card could be overturned on appeal.
Rovers won the reverse game 1-0 last October but struggled to make the most of their power play.
They dominated possession and total shots, but Trotters goaltender James Trafford was rarely bothered.
Bolton remain fifth in the table, with Forest Green anchored at the foot of the division.
