Celtic pulled off a famous victory over Glasgow City in front of a record crowd of 9,553 at Celtic Park to keep their SWPL title hopes alive.
In what was the biggest attendance for a women’s domestic game in Scotland, Celtic overtook Rangers on goal difference and within two points of leaders City.
Lauren Davidson silenced a rowdy, boisterous crowd early on with a neat close-range finish.
Natasha Flint’s raspy drive leveled off, before Claire O’Riordan’s header turned the game around and Kit Loferski finished with a run and finish.
It means a three-horse race for the title continues with two games to go, with Rangers and City facing off on the final day of the season next Sunday.
Celtic’s superior goal difference may well prove to be the difference in the battle for the league flag.
A big game deserved a big occasion and this was certainly one with Celtic’s usual home of Airdrie swapped for Celtic Park. Thousands of Celtic ultras provided a hard-hitting and hostile soundtrack behind goal.
However, it was the small group of City supporters at the other end of the stadium who were celebrating when Davidson forced his way through the Celtic defense and struck after 20 minutes.
It was a deserved lead for the league leaders, who had already issued warnings through a header from Davidson and a wide shot from Priscilla Chinchilla.
Amy Gallacher, Flint and Jacynta failed to hit the target as Celtic tried to rally.
And the home side squandered a glorious chance eight minutes into the second half when the City keeper feebly chipped in a Jacynta free-kick but Flint and Caitlin Hayes couldn’t find the net.
Goalkeeper Pamela Tajonar kept Celtic in the game when she deflected Anna Oskarsson’s header around the post.
The night was not going Celtic’s way but that moment proved to be a huge turning point as Fran Alonso’s side suddenly found another kit.
From outside the box, Flint fired a low right-footed shot into the corner through the fingers of Lee Gibson to equalize Celtic.
Suddenly City were on edge as the noise level increased. Both Loferski and Flint forced Gibson into saves and the constant pressure didn’t let up.
The hosts were rewarded when O’Riordan’s header from a corner deflected into the net.
And it was three when Loferski got ahead of the City defense and calmly kicked the ball past Gibson.
A fourth eluded Celtic when Flint left the crossbar and Gibson rushed to fend off the rebound.
Celtic travel to Hibernian on Sunday (1.10pm BST), Glasgow City are at home against Partick Thistle (4.10pm) and defending champions Rangers are at Hearts (3.00pm). The following week, Celtic host Hearts while City visit Rangers.
