Durham kept their composure on a biting final morning to beat Yorkshire by a wicket and extend their lead at the top of the County Championship Division 2 table.
Durham needed 33 to chase their tally of 246 wins, while the visitors needed two wickets to end a 17-game County Championship winless streak.
The hosts were dialed in to reduce 31 of the required 33 as Ben Raine completed a brilliant half-century under pressure.
George Hill threatened to break Durham’s heart when he pinned Matthew Potts lbw with his second delivery of the new ball.
But Brydon Carse headed for the crease with his side injury and squeezed the two winning runs between the third slide and the gully to head Durham over the line.
Durham claimed 19 points to edge away from second-placed Glamorgan in the standings, while Yorkshire remain winless this season.
On a fine morning in front of 254 spectators in Chester-le-Street, Yorkshire turned to Hill for the first time of the day, hoping he could continue to ward off magic for the White Rose down the middle after a fine performance.
Raine and Potts worked their first two singles pitches to cheers from the home crowd.
The Durham batters raised their fifty stand from 127 deliveries, bringing the hosts even closer to the goal of victory and calming the traveling Yorkshire faithful who remained.
Jordan Thompson replaced Hill, but Potts attacked the setter, drilling his third ball directly to the ground.
Thompson made a desperate dive to stop the ball and appeared to injure his shoulder after remaining on the pitch. The setter continued on his way but was sent from Raine’s legs to the fence.
Durham worked the target down to single digits before Shan Masood had one final roll of the dice and put the ball in the hands of off-spinner Dom Bess. Bess played a tight line but couldn’t stop Raine from blasting his way to his 15th fifty first class.
The new ball arrived and Hill brought one last bit of magic to pin Potts Lbw for 25 with just two needed for the win.
Carse arrived at the crease suffering from his core injury but managed to secure a huge win for Durham.
