Candela Obscura, Critical Role’s next live-action series, airs Thursday night. Ahead of the highly anticipated new series, the cast’s Darrington Press imprint published a Quick Start Guide which includes an overview of the Illuminated Worlds ruleset the action will be based on. It is accompanied by a video guide how to play by lead game designer Spenser Starke (Alice has disappeared).
In the video, Starke details how the mechanics of the horror-themed adaptation work. Illuminated Worlds is designed for narrative and cinematic play and uses a d6-based dice pool system that rewards high rolls while leaving plenty of room for game masters to create complications in the players path. The game includes five classes with each two very different subclasses. They are face (journalist and magician), muscular (soldier and explorer), scholar (professor and doctor), devious (criminal and detective) and bizarre (psychic and occultist). Each has a custom character sheet that provides additional details on how to run the character to the table, as well as serving as a starting point for character generation.
Illuminated Worlds will not use traditional stats common to other games like Dungeons & Dragons, such as Strength and Wisdom. Instead, he lists three drives – nerve, cunning, and intuition – and categorizes aspects of these drives into several categories from one to three. These ranks will help add dice to the player’s dice pools, rather than providing bonuses to the numerical value of the dice themselves. There is also a “golden” die that players will roll, and players can use it to replenish their stats in hopes of improving later rolls. The result is a new strategic layer of character management, which should carry over to the narrative itself as players make tough decisions about which dice to choose.
Candela Obscura premieres on Tic And Youtube Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. PT, with a video-on-demand release slated for June 8. A podcast version will also be available that day. You can download the Candela Obscura Quick Start Guide At Darrington Press website.
