Chelsea’s pursuit of Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez is “closed”, Benfica coach Roger Schmidt has said.
The Blues have been in talks with the Portuguese club over the signing of the 2022 World Cup winner, 21, but failed to reach an agreement.
He celebrated the goal scored in Benfica’s 2-0 Portuguese Cup victory at Varzim on Tuesday by striking the badge on his shirt.
“I’m glad this issue is closed and we can focus on football again,” Schmidt said.
Fernandez, who joined Benfica from River Plate in August, has a release clause of around £106million.
“It was very important for Enzo to come back to play with his team and for Benfica. Rumors of offers and opportunities are part of football,” added Schmidt, who has previously described Chelsea’s approach to Fernandez. as “disrespectful”.
“The important thing is how the player and the club handle the situation. Everything was very open and sincere.
“I never doubted his character, his personality and his attitude. An extraordinary player who loves playing football and for Benfica.”
