Everton were held to a halt by Liverpool in a fiery Merseyside Women’s Super League derby at boisterous Goodison Park.
Watched by a crowd of 22,161 fans, the match was the first women’s derby to be played in the men’s stadium.
Everton captain Gabby George opened the scoring in the 27th minute, floating in what looked like a cross close to the boundary line, but looping it past goalkeeper Rachael Laws.
Liverpool equalized when Taylor Hinds’ low shot ricocheted off Katie Stengel, but the striker managed to control the ball, spinning and shooting low to the left and just out of reach of keeper Courtney Brosnan.
A thrilling second half saw a goal apiece as Leighanne Robe’s effort was denied by what looked like an innocuous challenge on Brosnan, before Jess Park curled a superb shot into the top corner, but he was ruled out for a handball in preparation. .
But despite superb efforts from both sides, neither could find the winner to give their future fans bragging rights.
Sixth-placed Everton are now winless in four games, while a point for Liverpool puts them eight points clear of the relegation spot.
