Cancel your weekend plans. golden eye 007the basis of many friendships between millennial N64 owners, finally arrives on modern consoles on Friday, January 27.
Nintendo Switch owners will be able to play the game as part of the Nintendo Switch Online+ expansion pack, where it will be added to the library of N64 games that subscribers have access to. This version of the game is more or less identical to the original version, with one big addition: online multiplayer.
On Xbox, golden eye will be available on Game Pass and as a free update for owners of the Rare Replay Collection (finally filling the most glaring gap in its excellent library) but, sadly, without online multiplayer. Instead, the Xbox version will have a few modern touches, like alternate control options, unlockable achievements, and native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD – if you have the hardware.
In a sense, any appearance of golden eye on modern consoles is a minor miracle, as rights complications have kept it out of the nostalgic spotlight – not least when details of a canceled remaster surfaced in early 2021.
Xbox players missing out on online multiplayer is huge, but maybe they win in the end: it’s arguably the most faithful experience, and golden eye is not golden eye unless you get mad at someone for peeking at the screen.
