Seamus Power sits 28th in the world rankings after showing impressive form this year

Ryder Cup hopeful Seamus Power has been named in the Great Britain and Ireland squad to face a side from continental Europe at next year’s Hero Cup in Abu Dhabi.

The Irishman currently tops the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings after one win and two top five finishes in his first three events of the 2022-23 season.

He was selected along with 17 other players by Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald for the new event.

Europe will face the United States at the Ryder Cup in Rome next September.

The Hero Cup was introduced to give more players the experience of a team tournament ahead of the Ryder Cup, which is held every two years.

Ryder Cup teammates Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood will lead Europe and Great Britain & Ireland respectively.

Sweden’s Alex Noren and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, as well as former Irish Open champion Shane Lowry and England’s Tyrrell Hatton, will provide experience for both teams.

“We all thought it was important to combine experience and youth and I think we’ve struck that balance with a mix of great champions and Ryder Cup players, alongside guys who are hoping to get a place in Rome next year. next year,” Donald said.

The three-day event consists of a foursome session, a four-ball session and a singles match session and all 20 players participate in each session.

In addition to Power, Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson and Robert MacIntyre, English trio Callum Shinkwin, Jordan Smith and Matt Wallace, have been selected to play under Fleetwood.

Austrian Sepp Straka, Dane Rasmus Hojgaard, Frenchman Victor Perez, Adrian Meronk, the first Polish player to make it on the DP World Tour with a victory at this year’s Irish Open, Belgian Thomas Detry and the ‘Italian Guido Migliozzi make up the European team.

“Some of our young players have already shown incredible maturity in high-pressure situations and proven they can perform in big moments, so giving them the opportunity to compete on this stage alongside Alex Noren and Thomas Pieters will be really important at the start of what could be a great year for them,” said Molinari.

A remaining spot for each team will be allocated at the end of the DP World Tour calendar year.
