On January 19, Meta launched a new silent mode for Instagram users, which is basically a Do Not Disturb setting specifically for the app. It disables notifications and sends an automatic reply to people who try to contact you by DM.
While silent mode could work for anyone, it seems particularly aimed at teenagers – likely as part of Instagram’s ongoing attempt to shut down harm young people. The platform said it would specifically urge teens to turn on the new silent mode “when spending some time on Instagram late at night.” Users in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can all access silent mode on Instagram; the platform said in a post that(Opens in a new window) he “hopes to bring it to other countries soon”.

“Teenagers told us that they sometimes want to take time for themselves and that they may be looking for other ways to focus at night, while studying and at school,” the platform said in a post(Opens in a new window). The teens also told Instagram that the platform makes them feel bad, let’s not forget that. The the wall street journal2021 Facebook files showed leaked documents from Facebook’s own research(Opens in a new window) who found that “Instagram is harmful to a significant percentage of [teens]especially teenage girls.”

The platform also introduced a new way to manage in-app recommendations by allowing users to choose to hide multiple content items in Explore at once; ensure that when users say they are not interested in a post on Explore, this type of content will not be displayed in other places on the site such as Reels and Search; extending functionality that hides certain words in comments and DMs to apply to recommended posts elsewhere on Instagram; and allowing users to add words and wordlists (like “fitness”, perhaps) to ensure they are no longer recommended content. Instagram said users can access it in the “hidden words” section of the privacy settings.
