HBO’s adaptation of The last of us only getting stronger, but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited about where the video game series could go after 2018. The last of us part 2. During his press tour for the show, creative director of the game series and co-creator of the HBO show, Neil Druckmann, updated everyone on the status of Part 3and the fact that it might not happen at all.
In a interview with BuzzfeedDruckmann said Naughty Dog hasn’t made a decision yet on what to do with The Last of Us main series, nor does it feel pressured to do so.
“We are very privileged to have Sony as our publisher,” Druckmann said. “They’ve supported us every step of the way to follow our passions – which means that just because something succeeds, people think there’s all this pressure and we need to do a sequel. This is not the case. For us, Uncharted was a wild success — Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games – and we’re able to put our final brush on that story and say we’re done. We are moving forward. Likewise, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue or not.
That doesn’t mean the series is over, though. According to Druckmann, the team is constantly brainstorming story ideas in the hope that something sticks. But until they have the perfect one, we shouldn’t expect another entry in the franchise.
“Our process is the same thing we did when we did Part 2Druckmann told Buzzfeed. “That is to say, if we can come up with a compelling story that has that universal message and statement about love – just like the first and second game did – then we’ll tell that story. If we can’t find something, we have a very strong end with Part 2 and that will be the end.
Whatever happens next with The Last of Us games, Druckmann at least made it clear that it will be some time before the next numbered entry, if at all. Until then, Naughty Dog is currently working on a Last of Us multiplayer spin-off and hasn’t officially announced what their next big solo project will be.
