Mick Schumacher will be the Mercedes reserve driver in 2023.
The German, son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, lost his seat for 2023 when the Haas team dropped him in favor of veteran Nico Hulkenberg.
Schumacher’s Mercedes role will see him working in the team’s simulator and being ready to step in if Lewis Hamilton or George Russell can’t race.
“Mick is a talented young driver. We are delighted to have joined him,” said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
“He is a hard worker, he has a calm and methodical approach and he is always eager to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities.
“We also know that with two years of F1 racing experience under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace Lewis or George, should it become necessary.”
Schumacher, who will attend all the Grands Prix in the 2023 season, said he was “delighted” to take on his new role.
“I am committed to giving everything to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment,” said the 23-year-old.
“I take this as a fresh start, and I’m just excited and grateful to Toto and everyone involved for trusting me.
“F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I’m looking forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting all my effort into the Mercedes team.”
Ahead of Mercedes’ announcement, Ferrari released a statement saying they had cut all ties with Schumacher, who had been a member of their driver academy since 2019.
Schumacher raced for Haas for two seasons, with a best result of sixth at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.
Haas felt he was outclassed by teammate Kevin Magnussen when the Dane returned to F1 in 2022 and saw Hulkenberg as a more competitive proposition for next season.
