Paris St-Germain are threatening to leave the Parc des Princes in a row for ownership of the stadium.
PSG have played in the 47,000-capacity stadium since 1974 but believe it needs a major refurbishment which will cost around 500m euros (£443.45m).
They are ready to finance the works, but only if they are authorized to buy them.
This plan was rejected by the mayor of Paris, who told Le Parisien newspaper: “The Parc des Princes is not for sale. And it will not be sold”.
PSG reacted angrily, arguing that this stance will cost taxpayers money.
The club, who say the renovations and subsequent increase in capacity would allow them to generate revenue more in line with mainstream clubs elsewhere in Europe, say they will now be “unfortunately obliged to provide alternative options for our home”, which could include moving out. Paris.
A PSG spokesperson said: “It is surprising and disappointing to hear that the Mayor of Paris is taking a position which, effectively, will force PSG, our fans and communities out of the Parc des Princes.
“PSG and the Parc des Princes are part of the proud history and heritage of Paris.
“PSG have already invested over €85m to maintain the stadium, while committing a further €500m to renovations for our supporters and to enable PSG to grow and compete with other clubs to the fullest. high level in Europe.
“Obviously this huge investment would only be made by PSG if we actually owned the Parc des Princes. It is unfortunate that the mayor is suddenly – definitively – ruling out the sales talks that we have had for a long time, with the club now unfortunately obliged to propose alternative options for our house.”
