Spaniard Rafael Nadal is expected to be out for six to eight weeks with a hip injury which hampered him during his exit from the Australian Open.
Nadal, 36, had an MRI of his left hip in Melbourne and showed a torn left psoas muscle.
The world number two will return to Spain to begin physiotherapy treatment.
Nadal, top seed, said he was “mentally destroyed” after the end of his title defense in Melbourne.
“The CT scan showed a grade 2 injury in the psoas of the left leg,” Nadal tweeted on Thursday.
“Now it’s time to rest and do some anti-inflammatory physiotherapy.
“Normal recovery time is six to eight weeks.”
The schedule means Nadal could be fit to play the first Masters tournament of the 2023 season in Indian Wells in March.
The European clay-court season begins the following month and ends in early June at Roland Garros, where Nadal will hope to claim a record 15th title.
