League One Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a memorable FA Cup shock as they knocked out third-placed Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Josh Windass scored twice in the second half for the Owls as they emerged victorious from a draw at Hillsborough.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes gave Newcastle hope with over 20 minutes left with a close range finish but they couldn’t find a second.

This defeat is the first for Eddie Howe’s team since August 31 against Liverpool.

After both teams squandered good chances in a spirited first half, Windass opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half when he completed a flowing move.

George Byers started with a clever turn just inside Newcastle’s half before heading into the penalty area.

He sent the ball wide to Palmer, who slipped Dennis Adeniran and his cross shot was returned by Windass.

The striker looked like he was slightly offside but the assistant didn’t signal and with no VAR in operation the goal stood.

There was nothing controversial in the second. Windass was cleared by Michael Smith’s fine pass for the first time and showed tremendous composure as he opened his body and curled the ball past Martin Dubravka in the corner.

Hillsborough bounced back but the home side’s lead was halved four minutes later when Guimaraes, who also looked close to offside, stabbed from a yard after the Owls failed to take a corner.

Windass almost completed his hat trick with a ferocious long-range free-kick that returned from the bar and although home goalkeeper Cameron Green made a number of vital saves he could only watch Chris Wood open up the best Newcastle equalizer chance. with eight minutes to go.

More soon.
