The movie Super Mario Bros. is slowly turning into one of the most successful Mario games through the ages. The last born of the games its references is Super Smash Bros.. thanks to the new trailer in which Mario (Chris Pratt) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) face off on what is essentially a 2D Final Destination style stage.
Mario is almost immediately beaten by his oldest rival before he leaps into the air and grabs a bonus (much like To break): a combination that doesn’t seem to do much to him. This comedy bit gives us our first listen to Seth Rogen’s DK voice as he laughs at Mario’s futile attempts to win and quickly throws him offstage – in yet another To break tribute.
All these Smash Bros. The references shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering the movie already seems to draw on some of Mario’s most popular spin-off games. We’ve already had glimpses of Luigi (Charlie Day) battling ghosts, like he might in Luigi’s mansionand many characters racing across the screen in Mario Kart-style go-karts.
With all of these references already revealed, there are sure to be dozens more to dig into when The movie Super Mario Bros. hits theaters on April 7.
