If you have recently received a steam bridge and you can’t get enough of it, be prepared to keep using it for a while.
Valve’s portable PC gaming powerhouse was one of best tech launches of 2022, so naturally people want to know what’s next. In an extensive interview with The edgeSteam Deck designers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Lawrence Yang gave implied confirmation of what is not coming soon: a Steam Deck Pro.
Specifically, don’t expect an upgraded Steam Deck Pro with slightly more power in the near future. While Valve plans to follow up on the Steam Deck at some point, Griffais told The Verge that the company likes every user to have the same level of technical ability at this time.
“Right now the fact that all Steam Decks can play the same games and we have a goal for users to understand what kind of performance level to expect when playing and for developers to understand that that needs to be targeted…there’s a lot of value in having that spec,” Griffais told The Verge.
That said, Yang and Griffais said they want to eventually improve the display and battery life of the Steam Deck. This last aspect is, in particular, something that could take a lot of work. It’s possible to drain a Steam Deck’s battery in 90 minutes or less, depending on what you do with it.
But if display and battery improvements do occur, don’t expect them to be married to a small incremental change in power. We will probably have a Steam Deck 2 rather than a Steam Deck Pro.
