Phil Foden still has a “big role” to play in the country’s World Cup campaign despite playing a limited role in the opening two group games, England manager Gareth Southgate has said.
“We love Phil, he’s a great player,” said Southgate, who led England to four points in two games in Qatar.
“He’s going to play a big role in this tournament for us.”
Foden, who has scored seven goals in 14 Premier League games for Manchester City this season, has won 19 England caps since making his debut in 2020.
However, after being introduced late into England’s first Group B win against iranhe was left on the bench in the goalless draw with the United States as Southgate opted instead to call on Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford in the quest for a breakthrough.
While Southgate acknowledges that it’s impossible to please everyone, he praised Foden’s attitude ahead of Tuesday’s final group game against Wales.
“Phil’s mentality towards coaching and the way he approaches everything is excellent,” added Southgate.
Southgate also says Foden’s multiple attributes mean he can fit into the team in a variety of roles.
“There are different possibilities. He can play on either flank and can play as a false nine if we choose to do so,” he added.
“He can play against a striker, although he doesn’t do that as much at club level, so maybe that applies to certain games or certain times.
“He’s a very flexible player in terms of the attributes he has and where he can have an impact. He’s a goal threat, which is also very important.”
England must avoid a four-goal loss on Tuesday to qualify for the knockout stages, while Wales must win and hope for a draw between the United States and Iran to have any chance of progressing.
Southgate has dismissed suggestions that he and his team have come under extra pressure by playing another home country.
“Nothing more than normal. We recognize it’s a game with a lot of focus because it’s a local derby, but we are England – everyone wants to beat us,” Southgate said.
“There are high expectations every time we are on the pitch. We have to focus on playing the best we can while showing the composure and the ruthlessness that will be needed to win.”
