
Luis Enrique has quit as Spain manager after being knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco.
The 52-year-old took charge of the team in 2018 and guided Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said a “new project” should start but did not set a deadline for the announcement of a new boss.
“We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff,” RFEF said in a statement.
The former Spain midfielder stepped away from his role for a short time in 2019 because his late daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer, before returning for the team’s impressive Euro run in the tournament which was delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. .
Spain were knocked out of the Euros by eventual champions Italy after their semi-final ended in a penalty shootout.
They beat Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening World Cup group game but their possession-based play saw them accused of being ‘boring’ as they drew 1-1 with Germany and lost 2-1 to Japan.
On Tuesday, Spain were held to a goalless draw by Morocco before losing another penalty shootout as they were knocked out.
